Cashmere

Luxurious Fabrics in Quality and Craftsmanship

Johnstons of Elgin has pioneered the weaving of cashmere in Scotland since 1851, and remains the only fully vertical mill in Britain, transforming cashmere from raw fibre to finished article.

Cashmere is recognized as one of the most prized and precious commodities in the world. Johnstons only accepts the finest raw fibre painstakingly hand combed from the fine, downy under-fleece of cashmere goats in Mongolia and China.

Their Scottish mill in Elgin then uses 30 exacting processes of largely unchanged traditional techniques passed down through generations: dyeing, blending, carding, spinning, weaving, sourcing and teaseling to produce these beautiful fabrics within this historic site.

The Cashmere collection reflects Johnstons of Elgin’s long heritage in supplying the global market with exquisitely fine fabrics. The style is contemporary and enduring, with an international appeal.

Heritage Tweed

Legacy of Tweeds with Durability and Comfort

The Heritage Collection is a selection of the finest Estate and Saxony Tweeds, all woven at the original mill in Elgin, Scotland.

Estate Tweed cloths, originated by Johnstons of Elgin, were first woven in 1845. These cloths fulfilled two needs - the traditional provision of clothing by estate owners for their employees, and the need to provide camouflage for stalkers when they were on the hill. The destiny of the cloth is crucial to its durability and performance. In creating these enduring, classic patterns, Johnstons of Elgin continues to produce the exact number of warp and weft threads as used in original cloth over 150 years ago.

Saxony Tweed is a soft yet durable for jacketing and suiting. The years for the cloths are made using the original blend from the 200 year-old records. The mix of colours contains up to six component shades. The original colours are all carefully guarded in the archive and reflect the shade tones of the Scottish Highlands: heather, moorland, gorse, bracken, bluebell and birch. The authenticity ensures that garments made from the fabrics in the Heritage collection withstand the most demanding environment with its long-lasting performance and comfort.
